Foster Funnies

Christopher, age 5

On a recent trip to Walmart, Gunnar was shopping in the garden center with Chris. Chris wondered why they weren't looking at toys so Gunnar patiently explained, "I have a passion for plants." Chris promptly replied, "Well I have a passion for TOYS!"

Gunnar, age 15

At the end of season celebration for Upward basketball and cheerleading, the cheerleaders appeared to be concentrating very hard on getting their two "cheers" just so. Afterward, basketball player Trey commented, "The 'Spirit Girls' seemed kind of gloomy to me."

Occasionally I stay up late watching movies with my wonderful teenagers. A few weeks ago Trey got out of bed for a drink of water and caught us in the act. He said longingly, "I wish I could stay up watching movies and eating cookie dough" . . . so I let him. Max (13) took me aside and said with concern, "Mom, isn't that like the US policy with the Cubans? I mean, he's not supposed to get out of bed, but when he does you reward him!?!"

To the Max

We are now the proud parent's of two teenagers . . . both currently about 5'11" . . .

Max (13), muttering, during a disagreement with  Gunnar (15): "It's like talking to a brick wall, but it talks back!"

My niece, Keren, who moved near us this summer to escape the Minnesota cold, just wore dress shoes without hose for the first time. She was complaining about the blisters she got from this inaugeral experience and I suggested she wear no-show socks. She responded, "I think I'll just use duct tape next time."

Maxisms

Max walked over to a friend's in search of some information. He was gone for so long I called him up. When I asked if he had gotten the answer he said, "I don't really know." Confused, I said, "Are they home?" "Yes," he said, "but they're 'Key West confused', so I am coming home now."

What polite euphamisms our son has learned from our sojourn in that fair city!

Max was sitting across from me working on a reading assignment for his college class. He threw up his hands and said, "I don't get it, mom." As I leaned in for a look he said, "Oh, wait. There's a 'can't tell' option."

Max is so excited about his new headset he doesn't even need to be connected to wear it!

Chris, as he stood in front of our heaping grocery cart in the check out line, "Did you get anything to eat?"

Trey was very quiet in the back seat of the car as we left Paula's birthday party with the party favor her mother had handed them as they left. After quite awhile he said, "There! I finally 'de-pink-ified' it!"

*****

Gunnar, who hadn't done his homework, was listening to Max and I discuss their mutual reading assignment without much interest until Max said, "It was kind of weird she slept with the dead body."

Gunnar promptly held out his hand and said, "Could I see that book?"

*****

Gunnar and Dave were giving him lots of grief for some infraction and, as he went to correct the situation, Max was heard to mutter,  "I forgive you, Max."

Chris (5) to Gunnar (14) regarding one of Gunnar's friends: "I saw Hunter talking to a bunch of girls. It was CREEPY."

*****

Chris and I stepped off the boat into a cloudy and surprisingly cool morning and I (referring to the temperature) said, "What a lovely day."

Chris said, "Yes, the sun is gone."

It is amazing the coincidences that happen to people who pray . . .

I am heading to a three day conference for work next week . . . and usually enjoy the chance to "dress up" rather than my stay at home casualness. But, when I looked in my closet last week to make sure my travel gear was in order, I couldn't find my black suit jacket (gasp) or a couple of other key items of clothing. Tried to build a little shopping into my day yesterday, but the store in my price range was closed when I got there - which fit my budget, but didn't solve my dilemma. So, I prayed about it. And this morning - just now - I got a call from the dry cleaner where I had dropped of my missing clothes in MARCH wondering if I could come and get them. Yippee!!

I do not believe that God is Santa Claus and responds to my every whim, but in the midst of these very challenging times, I have experienced His kindness over and over - through friends, family and amazing coincidences. Regardless of my circumstance, I choose to praise and glorify Him.
