1999
Gunnar and Sophie, our dog, hunting for Philistines in the back yard after Sunday school.
Also, one day Gunnar was holding a bug carefully between his fingers. I cautioned him and said "You would be sad if the bug died." "Yes," he said soberly, "when the bug died on the cross."
6/3/00
Gunnar comforting a crying Max, "Come outside and play, buddy. You can shoot me."
7/13/00
I was surprised that Gunnar could identify the color silver as I hadn't worked with him on that color. Then one day we were at Safeway and it all became clear when he said, "I like that car." Me: "That silver one?" G: "Yes, that silverware car."
7/24/00
Gunnar crashed his bike the first day he had it to avoid hitting Max. He didn't cry, just matter-of-fact showed me where he had scraped his knees and elbows. Then he saw a black spot on the patio and said, "Look! I smashed that ant."
7/28/00
Gunnar prayed his first solo prayer while I was in London last Thursday night. Wow.
8/16/00
Last Sunday night at the Indian restaurant I caught Gunnar writing on his thumb with a pen. "Gunnar, you can only write on paper." He gave me a cheeky look so I reiterated, "You may only write on paper, - do you understand?" His response - "Yo no comprendo" - stunned me as it was my first indication that the Spanish tapes were working.
8/27/00
Gunnar, after repeatedly crashing the wagon he was pulling down the hall (with Max in it), hands off the handle to Dave and says, "Here, Daddy - it's not listening to me."
9/3/00
Boarding the plane for Denver with Dave, Max chatted and "high fived" his way through the first class cabin.
9/3/00
Gunnar, standing up as the ring bearer at Cindy & Matt's wedding with Piglet in a bowtie, holding his hand up patiently for the candy bribes from Jonathan & Nate (best men).
9/4/00
On the plane to Denver last Thursday, the "no smoking" sign prompted a discussion between Dave E. and G about why people couldn't smoke on the plane (because it smells bad and offends people). Smelling his own little fart, Gunnar asked loudly in panic, "Is there a no tooting sign, Daddy?"
9/11/00
Gunnar, after living in the hotel for six weeks and seeing that Max had peed on the floor upon our return from the swimming pool, "Mom, we have to get those girls in here to clean that up."
10/16/00
Gunnar prayed, "God, thank you for all the things that we appreciate."
10/20/00
"This is my right arm," Max said, holding up his right arm.
Me: "Dave, look!" (Max was only two at this time)
Daddy, "Wow Max, that's right!"
Max, holding up his right arm, "This is my right arm." Then, holding up his left arm he said, "this is my other right arm."
12/5/00
"Thank you God for the light that is burned out and two lights that are burned in." Max
12/5/00
Me: "9:05! How did it get to be 9:05?!?
Gunnar: "9:05? I hate that!"
Me: "Me too."
G, approaching the clock: "How do we turn this thing off?"
