The Beginning of Wisdom

Our family of six is reading through Proverbs this summer – one chapter each day (ie – today we read Proverbs 7 because it is July 7th). Everyone chooses their favorite verse as they read the chapter independently and writes it down in their morning quiet time then we talk about it together at dinner. It’s been fun to listen to what verses catch the boys' attention. An all time favorite, of course, has been "As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool returns to his folly." Proverbs 26:11

Max (12) seems to gravitate toward verses with bugs in them. Locust who march in ranks but have no leader really intrigue him. Trey (7) chooses the shortest verse as he is just learning to write and wants to take it easy. What's funny about Trey is he can still quote us the verses and references he chose last week - shades of his Nana Colwill, perhaps?

In addition to great God moments as a family, I received a voicemail this weekend that so humbled me. It was from the costume designer at the local performing arts theater where Gunnar, our 13 year old, is volunteering this summer. She wanted me to know what a blessing Gunnar has been to her and how astonished she is at the wise things he says. She said she thinks he said it came from Proverbs.

How fun is that? God is so good.

Of course, I do have to deal with the occasional loud whisper as a girl with lots of makeup or perfume walks by, “Is that the wayward woman, mom?” Proverbs is not for the faint of heart!
